A Behavioural Hearing Test is a non-invasive method used to evaluate an individual’s hearing ability by observing their responses to sound stimuli. Unlike advanced diagnostic tools that measure hearing through machines, this test relies on the patient’s behavioral reactions such as turning the head, eye movements, hand-raising, or repeating words when sounds are presented.
This test is particularly useful for infants, young children, and individuals with special needs, as it helps audiologists assess hearing without requiring complex instructions.
Hearing plays a vital role in speech, language, learning, and social development. Identifying hearing issues early allows for timely intervention and prevents potential delays. Behavioural hearing tests help:
Detect hearing loss at an early stage.
Evaluate how well a patient responds to different pitches and loudness levels.
Assess the impact of hearing loss on speech and communication.
Guide further diagnostic testing and management.
Depending on the age and ability of the patient, audiologists may use different approaches:
Used for newborns and infants; reactions such as eye widening, startling, or sucking changes are observed when sounds are presented.
Typically for children aged 6 months to 2 years; the child is trained to turn towards a sound, and is rewarded with a visual stimulus (like a toy lighting up).
For toddlers and young children, children are taught to perform a play task (like putting a block in a box) when they hear a sound.
For older children and adults who can raise their hand, press a button, or verbally respond when a sound is heard.
At ARC Hearing Centre, we use age-appropriate behavioural hearing assessments to ensure accurate results. Our audiologists are trained in handling children and special populations with patience, care, and expertise.
If a hearing concern is suspected, these tests act as the first step in the diagnostic pathway, followed by more advanced audiological evaluations if necessary.
