The Stapedial Reflex Test, also known as the Acoustic Reflex Test, measures the involuntary contraction of the stapedius muscle in the middle ear in response to loud sounds. Normally, when the ear detects a sudden loud noise, the stapedius muscle contracts to protect the inner ear from potential damage. This reflex plays an important role in controlling sound transmission and maintaining healthy hearing.
When this reflex is absent, weak, or abnormal, it can indicate underlying conditions affecting the middle ear, auditory nerve, or brainstem pathways.
