Brainstem Evoked Response Audiometry (BERA) is a specialized hearing test that evaluates how the auditory nerve and brainstem respond to sound. Unlike traditional hearing tests that require active participation, BERA is an objective, non-invasive, and painless test, making it especially useful for newborns, infants, young children, or individuals who cannot respond reliably in routine hearing assessments.
During the test, small electrodes are placed on the scalp and earlobes, and sounds are delivered through earphones. The brain’s responses to these sounds are then recorded to assess the functioning of the auditory pathway from the inner ear to the brainstem.
To detect hearing loss in newborns and infants who cannot communicate.
To diagnose nerve-related (sensorineural) hearing issues.
To identify delays or abnormalities in the auditory nerve pathway.
To support early intervention and rehabilitation in children with suspected hearing problems.
To help in the assessment of patients with balance issues, tinnitus, or unexplained hearing loss.
Once the BERA test results are obtained, they help specialists plan the most suitable treatment or intervention. Depending on the diagnosis, recommendations may include:
If hearing loss is linked to treatable conditions like ear infections or nerve issues.
Follow-up assessments ensure continuous progress and adjustment of treatment plans.
Helps children with delayed speech due to hearing issues improve communication skills.
In cases of profound hearing loss where hearing aids are insufficient, cochlear implants may be advised.
For children or adults diagnosed with hearing loss, early fitting of hearing aids ensures better speech and language development.
